The Martian Front

The Roughriders, having secured the face on Mars continually patrol the area around the newly built Fort Douglas.  Patrols go out daily to make sure the area is clear of the enemy and measures to further fortify the perimeter is constant.

Rick "Ricochet" O'Shea, former cowboy turned Roughrider had this to say about the long patrol duty.

"It's a tedious job, mostly riding for long periods of time. With little water around we have to make sure we don't stray too far from Fort Douglas.  Mostly it's pretty boring until a "Skinny" (nickname given to the martian enemy) takes a pot shot at you.  Or the occasional skirmishes with the Bosch, to break up the monotony. Mopping up any German holdouts and martian askaris has been nasty business but we're getting the job done."

Not everyone in the United States agrees that we should be on Mars.  The Anti-Imperialist League is one such group that has opposed the Spanish American War along with the current action on Mars.  Well known author and raconteur, Mark Twain is not impressed with Roosevelt's martial prowess.  He fired off this article in the New York Herald:

"I left these shores, at Vancouver, a red-hot imperialist. I wanted the American eagle to go screaming into the Martian landscape. It seemed tiresome and tame for it to content itself with he Rockies. Why not spread its wings over Mars, I asked myself? And I thought it would be a real good thing to do
I said to myself, here are a people who have suffered for three years under the French and the Germans. We can make them as free as ourselves, give them a government and country of their own, put a miniature of the American constitution afloat in the Sea of Tranquility, start a brand new republic to take its place among the free nations of the Earth. It seemed to me a great task to which had addressed ourselves.
But I have thought some more, since then, and I have read carefully the treaty of Paris, and I have seen that we do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the planet Mars. We have gone there to conquer, not to redeem. . .
It should, it seems to me, be our pleasure and duty to make those people free, and let them deal with their own domestic questions in their own way. And so I am an anti-imperialist. I am opposed to having the eagle put its talons on any other land."

Whatever your opinion is at the moment, our boys are over there getting the job done and they need our support.

The World Beneath The Clouds Kickstarter

Aerolyth Enterprises, makers of Hive Queen and Country announced a Kickstarter for a new VSF source book about the planet Venus, called The World Beneath The Clouds.  Looks interesting, I've yet to buy Hive Queen but this new book has really sparked my interest.  Love the cover art, it reminds me of the old Roy Krenkel pulp fiction art.
